In Memoriam Frank Dittmeyer

German historian Frank Dittmeyer, who played a key role in interviewing Harry Fisher in 2002 and other volunteers of the Abraham Lincoln Batallion in 2002 and 2003, passed away on March 10th, 2010.  He was only 45.

We miss him.

As of October 2008, we can finally look forward to Harry Fisher's second book actually being published in the English language soon now.

While the German translation was completed some time ago, efforts are still being made to find a publisher here.

The video documentary "Spanish Heavens above America" (German title: "Spaniens Himmel über Amerika"), completed by German film makers around Frank Dittmeyer, Thomas Molck, Markus Adloff, and Jörg Briese was completed in 2004.
The first public showing took place in Germany in early April 2005.

The DVD (English, German with subtitles, NTSC or PAL) is currently no longer available (as of August 4th, 2011).
Price including S&H to the U.S. was $19.00.
Please contact us if you are still interested in obtaining a copy of it and we will let you know if this can be accomplished.

Meanwhile, the whole documentary can be watched on YouTube in five parts.

An updated version of the video documentary "The Other America" was shown to an audience in Hamburg, Germany, on January 28, 2004.
The "real" version of it, however, is still being worked on.  We appreciate your patience.

Harry's family and friends would like to thank everyone who attended the May 4th, 2003 Memorial in New York City for their kind words and thoughts.  We would also like to express our appreciation to all those who sent messages to help us celebrate Harry Fisher's extraordinary life.

Dear Friends,

CNN reports about “Operation Iraqi Freedom” using “embedded” correspondents and showing little of the worldwide protests against the U.S. aggression on Iraq.  They want us to believe that 70% of the U.S. citizens back this goddamn war.  I doubt it.

One of the “others” is our friend Harry Fisher whose fine anti-war book “Comrades” I helped publish in Germany two years ago.  Like my father, he wanted to relay a simple yet important message, based on his own experience:  War is never anything glorious, anything heroic or worthwhile, but it is a bloody, stinky mess that generates new hatred and injustice for generations to come.  There are innocent people dying and no one deems it necessary to report about their fates.

At age 92, Harry Fisher did not consider himself too old to keep up the fight for peace and social justice.
Outraged and angry about the cynical war on Iraq, he died at yesterday’s huge anti-war demonstration in New York City.

Stop this war and all future ones,

Uli Kolbe

German film makers Frank Dittmeyer and Jörg Briese returned for the 2003 reunion of the Lincoln veterans in New York City, hoping to complete their documentary called "The Other America".
Interviews with vets Clarence Kailin, Jock Stockwell, Moe Fishman, Abe Smorodin, and Jack Shafran were conducted.

We set up a page dedicated to German IBer Willi Remmel on this site along with an English summary.  Willi's fate and that of
German-American Fred Schofs were among those newly discovered after Harry Fisher's reading tour across Germany in 2001.

John Fisher and the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus are planning to be back in Germany for the June 2003 Pressefest, having been invited by the organizers.

Frank Dittmeyer and Joerg Briese completed their first production, a video documentary about Harry Fisher, featuring interviews with other U.S. vets.  It will be presented to audiences in different parts of Germany soon.
